NAS JRB New Orleans is one of two Joint Reserve Bases in the country that serve and house commands from various branches of the Armed Services. NAS JRB New Orleans currently supports two Naval Air Reserve Squadrons, two Marine Forces Reserve units, a Coast Guard Air Station, a Louisiana Air National Guard fighter wing, an Army Reserve unit, a Fleet Readiness Center, a Navy Reserve Operational Support Center, and other support units.

Nearly 5,400 military, Department of Defense civilian employees and contractors work at the base daily, and approximately 1,700 family members live in more than 900 housing units. The Public Private Venture housing complex, operated by Patrician Military Housing, is one of the most successful ventures of its type in the country.

NAS JRB is also home to the first ever charter school on a military installation. Belle Chasse Academy instructs children in grades K-8 accommodating an enrollment of more than 900 students.
