Commander Hangartner is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada. He enlisted in the Navy in 1997 as a Nuclear Engineering Laboratory Technician and served two tours on submarines before his selection for STA-21 as a First-Class Petty Officer. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from University of Northern Florida in 2010, and was commissioned as a Nuclear Submarine Officer.
A career submarine officer, Commander Hangartner’s shipboard assignments include: Chemistry and Radiological Controls Assistant and Communications Officer on USS TENNESSEE (SSBN-734) BLUE Crew (2012-2015), Navigator and Operations Officer on both USS GEORGIA (SSGN-729) GOLD Crew and USS RHODE ISLAND (SSBN-740) BLUE Crew (2018-2021), and Executive Officer on USS PENNSYLVANIA (SSBN-735) GOLD Crew (2023-2025).
CDR Hangartner’s shore tours include: Striker-Trident Officer at 20
th Air Force Headquarters, Cheyenne, WY, and Deputy Branch Head for PERS-403, Nuclear and Submarine Enlisted Detailing, Millington, TN.
Commander Hangartner’s personnel decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Fourth Award), Air Force Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Sixth Award), and numerous other individual and unit awards.
