Commander Nhan “Dex” V. Nguyen

Commander Nguyen, a native of Dexter Maine and graduated from Dexter High School in 1999.  He enlisted in the United States Navy as an undesignated Seamen Recruit in June of 1999 and went through basic training at Recruit Training Center Great Lakes.  Following basic training he reported to the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) homeported out of Mayport, Florida and conducted two 5th Flt deployments and participated in OPERATION NOBLE EAGLE after the 9/11 attack. CDR Nguyen reported for duty in 2003 to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, in Kittery ME where he served as a Tug Master. 

From 2006-2008 he served onboard the USS EMORY S. LAND in La Maddelanna Italy and conducted the MSC conversion in Bremerton WA.  In 2009 he reported to Great Lakes Illinois and was selected to serve as a Recruit Division Commander for 900 Divisions out of USS CONSTITUTION.  CDR Nguyen commissioned in FEB 2010 through the Limited Duty Officer program and was designated as a 6110 Deck LDO. 

From 2010 to 2013 he was assigned to USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan completing multiple deployments and earned both his OOD (U/W) and Surface Warfare Officer Pin. From 2013 to 2015 he was assigned to the USS WASP (LHD 1) in Norfolk VA, and served as the Assistant First LT. where he conducted a 15 month DPMA, extensive JSF testing and training cycle in preparation for JSF’s maiden deployment to 7th flt.

From 2015 to 2018 he was assigned to Expeditionary Strike Group SEVEN as the ACOS for Training and Readiness. Responsible for the training and readiness of the Strike Groups assets to include 9 FDNF Ships. From 2018 to 2020 he was assigned to the USS NEW YORK (LPD 21) in Mayport FL, and served as the First LT.  Where he conducted 3 deployments in support of both 5th and 6th fleets. 

From 2020-2023 he served as the N3/OPS for Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo, responsible for the Installations Fire, Security, Port Ops, Emergency Management, Training, Explosive Safety and Safety Departments.  From 2023-2025 CDR Nguyen served on the USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN77) as First LT.

CDR Nguyen reported for duty to JBCHS as 628 MSG Deputy and NSA XO in June 2025.
CDR Nguyen earned his MBA from University of Maryland Global Campus in 2019.
CDR Nguyen has earned multiple military, unit and campaign awards.
