Captain William G. Lane Jr.

Captain Lane enlisted in the Navy in 1989.  He completed nuclear propulsion training as Electronics Technician in 1991 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in 1998.  After commissioning through Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in 1999, he completed flight training and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 2001.  He earned a master’s degree from the University of Maryland University College in 2014.
 
Capt. Lane’s initial sea tour was onboard USS Bainbridge (CGN-25), where he completed two deployments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Southern Watch.  After fleet replacement training in the S-3B Viking, he completed his initial junior officer tour with the Diamondcutters of VS-30 and deployed onboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) in support of OEF.  After completing transition training in the FA-18F, he was assigned to the Diamondbacks of VFA-102 and made multiple deployments onboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) as part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces.  He completed his department head tour with the Jolly Rogers of VFA-103, which included a deployment onboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) in support of OEF.  Cmdr. Lane reported to the Red Rippers of VFA-11 in April of 2015 as the Executive Officer and deployed onboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR).  In July of 2017 he assumed command of the Red Rippers.  In April of 2019 he reported to the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) as the Air Officer and deployed in support of OIR. 
 
Capt. Lane’s shore and staff billets include instructor duty at Nuclear Field “A” School.  After completing training as a Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor at Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), he was assigned as the tactics branch head with the Vampires of Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9).  He completed his joint tour with the Joint Staff J-7 as part of the Deployable Training Team, as well as a facilitator for the Keystone, Capstone, and Pinnacle Joint Operations Modules.  In July of 2020, he reported to the U.S. Mission to NATO as the Deputy Director for the Defense Operations Directorate.  In June of 2021, he reported to Naval Support Activity Bahrain to begin his next tour as the Commanding Officer.  In July of 2023, he reported to Navy Region Southeast as Chief of Staff.
 
Capt. Lane has accumulated over 900 hours in the S-3B and over 2700 hours in the FA-18F.  His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Air Medal (three awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), as well as numerous unit, campaign, and service awards.
